We Review: Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay
As one of the most-awaited movies in the MMFF, Pagpag proved its promise and that it is worth-watching for. As Star Cinema and Regal Films - two of the best horror-film producers in the country - collaborate again for the first time in years, they were able to keep their legacy.
The story of Pagpag is somewhat similar to Feng Shui, a Kris Aquino horror movie. Cedric (Daniel Padilla) and his friends Hannah (Michelle Vito), Ashley (Miles Ocampo), Justin (CJ Navato) and Rico (Dominic Roque) came across the wake of Roman (Paulo Avelino) after bumping with Leni (Kathryn Bernardo) - a funeral parlor owner who organized Roman's wake. Lucy (Shaina Magdayao) welcomes them in the house. Cedric's friends soon violates the beliefs in the wake - which results later on to numerous and horrific deaths of the characters. Leni and Cedric are now deemed to solve the mystery.
The cinematography of the film is good although there are certain changes during the first few scenes of the film. I also liked the way they shock the audience. There's nothing new with its formula that you already know something scary is bound to happen, but Pagpag was still able to shock and scare the hell out of me. The scariest part for me were the less shocking ones actually - the scene where Mac-Mac (Clarence Delgado) was left alone inside the Church, lights suddenly turned off and doors were closed, and the part where Roman was released from his tomb and floated in the air. The scariest death for me was Eva's (Matet de Leon). My personal favorite is of course, Dominic Roque's death scene! Hahaha. :)
Of course, the film also has its flaws like the holy water being automatically closed after being thrown in the air opened or the meaning of Cedric's wound but of course, if your aim is just to get entertained, you won't care about these details anymore. However, we should credit its amazing musical scoring which really gave the horrifying feel.
Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla's undeniable chemistry created something fresh from the usual horror flick that we have been watching. The incorporation of romance and horror is something new for the Filipino audience (except for Corazon which is still my favorite and is the best) and Kathniel's chemistry helped for it to work. However, they should've at least added more sequences on the build-up of their love story for it to be more realistic. The young cast also did a great performance. Shaina Magdayao is really pretty, and her acting as a mysterious lady was believable. Matet de Leon is also convincing and I love the twist in her role. Janus del Prado's humor is undeniably a plus point in this movie. Clarence Delagado is really cute on-screen! And Paulo Avelino gives a good scare, but how can you afford to get scared upon seeing his oh-so-handsome face!
Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay is really a must-watch. It's a good movie with a mix of horror, romance and comedy which are incorporated well.
Pagpag is still showing in some cinemas, so go buy your ticket now and watch it!
