On the eve of his 25th birthday, Rocco Espiritu (Xian Lim) spends every cash that he has for an endless drinking party, as he is about to get the trust fund his famous celebrity grandmother Lala (Pilita Corrales) gave him. Unfortunately, when he is about to acquire everything, he learns that there is one condition before getting the fund -- and that is a marriage contract. He needs to get married first before acquiring the money. Meanwhile, Raquelita Dela Cruz a.k.a. Rocky (Kim Chiu) is a bubbly, perky wanna-be actress who is willing to do everything for her family. She constantly goes to auditions that's why she was hired as Rocco's 'bride'.
Rocco and Rocky continue to pretend as husband and wife, as they soon realize they are falling in love with each other. But there is actually an underlying twist that was surprisingly unveiled at the early part of the movie, which I would not tell, of course.
Anyway, the movie's brightest star is obviously Kim Chiu. From the trailer to the movie, she was very consistent. And her quirkiness was really natural. I really love her in this movie! Unfortunately, I cannot compare her from her previous movie "Bakit...?" because I have not seen that yet. However, if I ever get the chance to see the movie, I will still prefer Rocky over her Bakit character. Xian Lim also proved that he can do real dramatic scenes. But then, he should work out more, because there are times that he cannot jive with Kim's energy level. But his hotness (with his blank and white tank top scenes - which he did not do that much in Ina Kapatid Anak) is undeniable.
The production design is also good, the color schemes are just right, it does not hurt the eyes. I love Kim and Xian's house, and their Fernbrook wedding (if that is in Fernbrook?) looks so elegant. The musical scoring also contributes to the kilig and dramatic factors of the movie. I also love Kim Chiu's clothes, she really looks pretty on the screen.
And of course, Direk Mae Cruz - who is definitely the main reason why I watched the movie, definitely gave another stellar production. She really directs the best love stories on movies and TV. That's why I wish she would take a rest from doing movies and go back to teleseryes, but not because of her works ha, I just missed her in a teleserye!
Bride for Rent is a good watch, though using already a familiar formula, the twists and turns of the movie plus its being so entertaining and feel-good makes it a really good watch. Congratulations again to Star Cinema and Direk Mae!
